There are some relatively simple steps you can take to help identify and solve your home or business odor problem. These are particularly helpful if you can’t figure out what is happening or afford professional cleanup service.
Odor Eliminating Steps
- We begin with the obvious. Fresh air movement! Opening your home or office windows should be your first step. Followed by activating the blower in your home or office air handling unit. This is accomplished by switching the fan setting on the thermostat for the air handler to “On” rather than “Auto”. You may also want to install as good of a quality air filter as possible.
- HEPA Filters can help with some odors. This will not work for most chemical odors, but it can be successful for circulating particulates. Some of these particulates are mold, cigarette smoke, dust, pollen and allergens. If you have a family member or employee who is particularly sensitive to such particles, it would be recommended to install a separate room air filter containing its own HEPA filter.
- Filters that produce Ozone are not recommended as they may produce their own health problems.
- Remove items that may be holding onto odors. Remove items such as papers, stuffed animals, cloths and similar items. Odors can stick to and be absorbed by furnishings, flooring, as well as other building contents and materials. You may need hire Mr. and Mrs. Restore to help remediate such odors.
Is Your Home or Office Polluted?
According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) the concentration of some indoor pollutants is often 2-to-5 times higher than in outdoors! The EPA suggests maintaining proper indoor relative humidity (RH) levels to help reduce the effects of poor indoor air quality. Molds and other fungi grow easily in such damp environments.
