Continuing with our post-celebratory holiday clean up series, below are a few more tips to help you get your home back to its original condition. These are specifically related to your kitchen and appliances.

Kitchen Cleaning

To keep up with the overload of cooking and baking you performed, your kitchen and its appliances were pushed to their limits (not to mention the operators within). Here are a couple of kitchen cleaning tips to get you back to normal.

Oven Cleaning

  1. Heat your oven to between 360 and 400.
  2. Add clean water to a casserole dish and fill with 1/2 cup vinegar and one cup water.
  3. Let the water boil for 30 minutes then let it cool down.
  4. Once cooled, use a clean towel to wipe away any baked on mess.

Casserole Dish Cleaning

This would be ideal to do prior to cleaning your oven as you can use the built up heat to then clean the oven using the technique above.

  1. Put 1 tablespoon of dish soap and 1/2 tablespoon of baking soda in your dish.
  2. Add enough water to cover the baked on spots but not enough that it boils over.
  3. Heat the dish to a boil in your oven.
  4. Remove the hot dish from the oven and carefully scrub the baked on food away.
  5. BE CAREFUL TO NOT GET BURNED!

Sink Cleaning

Do you have a sink with a garbage disposal unit? If so, freshen it up with those left over lemons. Run lemon or orange rinds through the garbage disposal occasionally to help remove any odors and food grime build up.

Has the drainage of your sink slowed down? Use baking soda and vinegar to help clean it out. First, get your sink to produce hot water then turn off the water. Pour about 1/2 of a cup of baking soda down the empty drain followed by 1/2 a cup of distilled vinegar. Let the solution sit and bubble for about 5 minutes. Flush it out with hot water.

Microwave Cleaning

  1. Put lemon juice in a microwave-safe bowl with water.
  2. Microwave on high for 3 minutes and let this mixture sit for about 10 minutes.
  3. Microwave for another 3 minutes and let it sit for another 10 minutes.
  4. Once cooled, wipe out the unit using a clean cloth.

Glass Top Stove Cleaning

  1. Wipe down the glass top with distilled white vinegar.
  2. Lightly cover the glass top with baking soda, it may begin to bubble.
  3. Soak an old towel with distilled vinegar and place it over the glass top and let sit for about 15 minutes.
  4. Scrub the glass top with the baking soda and a warm, damp towel.
  5. If the cooked on food didn’t come off, carefully use the edge of a razor blade (at a 45 degree angle) to scrape off the cooked on mess.

Cutting Board Cleaning

  1. Cut a lemon in half.
  2. Rub the open half on the stained cutting board.
  3. Rinse off and repeat above steps until clean.
